There are provided ultraviolet light absorbing agents of the formula wherein: X is ; Y is H or OH; Z is H, OH, OQ or OW, where at least one Z is OH if Y is H; Q is -CONH (CH2)3Si(R2)X(OR1)y or - CONH(CH2)3Si(R2)x(OCOR1)y; and W is -CmH2m+1; where x = O, 1 or 2, y = 1, 2 or 3, x + y = 3, R1 and R2, independently, are each alkyl Having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and m = 1 to 18. Also provided are organopolysiloxane protective coating compositions containing said ultraviolet light absorbing agents having unique utility for protecting transparent plastic articles.
