PURPOSE:To obtain uniform combustion and save fuel consumption by dispersing the mist injected from a fuel injection valve to the whole circumferential wall in a cavity on a piston top face to the direction of the depth of the cavity by squish. CONSTITUTION:A cavity 2 is bored at the center of a piston 1 and the ratio between an opening area A of an opening part 2h thereof and an area AO of the piston top face, A/AO, is selected at about 0.13. Meanwhile, the diameter of the opening part 2h is set at about 7.8/10 of the inner diameter of the cavity 2 to prevent suction air from flowing to top flat face of the piston 1. As the piston 1 rises, the swirl of suction air is restrained in its swirling speed properly by the viscosity of air and the friction of a cylinder wall, and injection of fuel is started in a hollow-cone-shaped three-dimentional pattern with a tangntial speed component from a swirl injection valve 3, and fuel is conducted along the inner wall face of the cavity 2 to the direction of the depth by the squish S flowing into the cavity 2.
