Operating compression ignition engines on both gaseous and liquid fuels

Diesel engine 1 operates on either liquid fuel in the conventional manner or a mixture of liquid fuel and a combustible gas (e.g. L.P.G.) stored in bottles 31. Engine 1 is started on liquid fuel alone and solenoid 21 is energised via heated bi-metallic switch 23, and mechanically operates on the fuel rack of liquid fuel injection pump 4 to enable it to control the flow of fuel up to the maximum capacity of the pump. After a predetermined time the bimetallic switch 23 is heated such that it opens and de-energises solenoid 21. The pump can only supply about 70% of its maximum with solenoid 21 deenergised. On depression of accelerator pedal 6 to a predetermined position, switch 42 closes and gas valve 41 opens and gas flows through regulator 43 to a venturi section of air intake duct 3, the pressure depression therein inducing gas flow; no throttle valve is provided. The accelerator pedal controls the position of the fuel rack. When bottles 31 are empty pressure switch 34 closes to energise solenoid 21, 46 is a dashboard mounted overide switch to energise the solenoid.
