The response to stress of a thin layer electromechanical transducer (9) is amplified by bonding to at least one face of the transducer a relatively thick layer (10,11) of a solid, deformable but incompressible material (I). For boosting the response of piezoelectric or piezoresistive transducers to hydrostatic stress, to obtain a gain of between 4 and 56. Applicable to flat or tubular transducer elements typically 6-30 microns thick, to produce a signal level similar to that of a ceramic transducer from stresses applied either normal or parallel to the face of the core transducer. Esp. suitable for integrating a stress transducer into a cylindrical elastomeric coupling of the 'silentbloc' (RTM) type, hydrostatic pressure instruments, using e.g. polyvinylidene film coated with metal or filled with conductive carbon. |
