In the event of a rope break or of an inadmissible rope stretching of the pull rope (8, 9) of a rope-driven transport track employed in underground mining, in order to activate the emergency braking system provided on the brake car of this transport track, an electrical conductor (15, 16) extending over the entire length of the pull rope (8, 9) is provided on the latter and is connected to the electrical circuit (18) of an electrohydraulic monitoring device (11). As long as the circuit (18) is closed, the brake cylinders (31) of the braking system are under hydraulic pressure and the brakes are in the position of readiness. An electrically adjustable 3/2-way valve (23) is provided for this. If the circuit (18) is opened as a result of a rope break or inadmissible rope stretching, the 3/2-way valve (23) is adjusted and the feed of the hydraulic fluid to the brake cylinders (31) is interrupted. The brakes drop by means of the restoring force of mechanical brake springs (39). <IMAGE>
