PURPOSE:To regulate the size of a printing letter, by a method wherein two pieces of the line data having the same contents are made to be one set according to the printing area width per one letter, one piece of line data among the character data in which a plurality of sets of them are disposed in an array is inserted or extracted, and the printing is executed on the basis of the read character data. CONSTITUTION:A printing area width memory part 3 produces the data of the printing area width per one letter according to the data of the left and right margin width inputted from an input part 1. When one line is made to be of 80 letters, the numerical value data of 0 in left margin and 80 in right margin is outputted as the data of 80 in printing area width in a state as it is given, and hereinafter the printing area width data corresponding to the left and right margin is outputted in the same way. Such an output from the printing area width memory part 3 is sent to a decoder 7 and the decoder 7 produces the output decoded at the output terminals of 1-20 according to the input from the printing area width memory part 3. When the printing area width is 40, output is generated at all the terminals 1-20. Thereby, a letter of the best size corresponding to the setting of the left and right margin can be printed.
