PURPOSE:To attain accurate trimming to an original of various shapes such as circle or rhombus by using an arithmetic circuit such as a microcomputer to access a memory storing original position data at each main scanning line. CONSTITUTION:A background image other than an original is transferred in black by retaining the upper part of the original 1 by means of a black original retainer. An original platen glass 2 is scanned by moving an image read unit 3 comprising a light source 4 lighting the original and a contact type line image sensor 5 converting an optical image into an electric signal in the direction of arrow. Picture data of one line read by the sensor 5 is processed by an image processing circuit 6 and inputted to an original recognition circuit 7 and a trimming circuit 8. A white level detection circuit in the circuit 7 detects white picture elements being the background color of the original to form original position data and writes an address on a memory. A CPU 9 reads the said address, which is sent to the circuit 8, where an undesired image region is eliminated and the result is sent to an external image processor.
