A wet clutch assembly (10) for use as a starting clutch for a continuously variable transmission comprising a piston (12) fixed to a shaft (11) and guided (27) to rotate with a cylinder (14) encircling the piston and a friction plate (38) engageable by the piston and a pressure plate (32) fixed to the cylinder when fluid pressure increases from idle rpm in a cavity (24) between the piston (12) and the cylinder (14).
