During defrosting the evaporator (4) of a heat pump, a switching element (7) with an upper and lower switching point is used for switching on and off the defrosting process. If appropriate, the switching off is carried out early by a further switching element (9) in front of the compressor (1) or by a time switch (10) in order to prevent damage to the condenser (3).
