The invention relates to a converter, especially for supplying a discharge lamp (E), having a rectifier (G), a step-up converter with a charging inductor (L), a charging diode (D) and a charging switch (T2, T2') as well as a charging capacitor (C), and having an invertor, having at least two switches (T1, T3) which are switched on alternately - designated as primary and secondary switches from here on - which are connected in a series circuit in parallel with the charging capacitor (C). The object of the invention is simple control of the charging switch (T2, T2') with automatic switching-off of the charging switch when the invertor is switched off. To this end, the control of the charging switch is synchronised by the square-wave voltage to one of the switches (T1, T3) of the invertor. <IMAGE>
