The invention concerns sulfonating or sulfating organic liquid with sulfur trioxide gas. Such reactions are violent and frequently result in an undesirable colored product. The invention comprises an apparatus and continuous process for controllably reacting the gas with a thin film of the liquid whereby a high quality, colorless product is obtained. The apparatus includes a rotatable spheroidal reactor (10) having a liquid inlet (18). The reactor is connected to rotatable shaft (11). The reactor contains stationary separator disks (52, 60, 70 and 74) between which is passed the gas for reaction with the thin film of liquid flowing down the reactor chamber wall. In this way, the reaction surface is divided into a plurality of areas and the quantity of gas delivered to each area can be individually controlled. The resulting high quality product is collected by stationary scoop (82). |
