Process for producing atoms in inverted excitation states

There is described a process for producing atoms of a given chemical element in inverted excitation states which can be used in a laser. A chemical compound is used which can be decomposed, by addition of energy, into components between which chemical reactions take place providing the atoms in the inverted excitation states.
