The information is detected with a control part I for processing focus detection which controls the range Q where the focusing detection is processed and which consists of the group of photoelectric conversion surfaces A of a focusing detection element K for capturing the object image by expanding said range to, for example, the range Qn. If the ring Z is turned to a wide side, the range Q is controlled so as to decrease to, for example, the range Q1, and the surfaces A of the element K are properly selected, whereby the area for detecting the focus is varied. Only the defocusing rate captured by the faces A within the range Qn or Q1 is detected and the automatic focusing is controlled, whereby the accuracy of detection is improved.
