PURPOSE:To improve the accuracy of focus detection and to control exactly automatic focusing, by selecting the photoelectric conversion surfaces of a focusing detection element and changing the range where the focusing detection is processed thereby varying the area for detecting focusing. CONSTITUTION:When a zoom ring Z is turned in such a way that a zoom state comes to a telephoto side, the information (for example, the focal length of a zoom lens) of zoom information Z is varied. The information is detected with a control part I for processing focus detection which controls the range Q where the focusing detection is processed and which consists of the group of photoelectric conversion surfaces A of a focusing detection element K for capturing the object image by expanding said range to, for example, the range Qn. If the ring Z is turned to a wide side, the range Q is controlled so as to decrease to, for example, the range Q1, and the surfaces A of the element K are properly selected, whereby the area for detecting the focus is varied. Only the defocusing rate captured by the faces A within the range Qn or Q1 is detected and the automatic focusing is controlled, whereby the accuracy of detection is improved. |
