Composite foamed organic materials made by impregnating an open-celled organic foam (flexible or non-flexible) with an aqueous suspension of an insoluble solid additive to deposit the solid particles within the cells, and then drying. Organic foams and additives may be varied widely, but preferred foam is a rubber or polyurethane and preferred additives are layer-mineral type, especially a vermiculite, montmorillonite or bentonite. Products can be impregnated uniformly or have impregnant locally concentrated in controlled fashion, e.g. in surface zones, to get specialised properties. Additives can impart filling or other properties, but especially fire-retardancy, which can be combined with rigidising or retention of resiliency. Impregnated products can be given optional after- treatments, e.g. surface coating. |
