The original cine film intended for projection at 16 frames per second is replaced by two negative impressions which are superimposed with an offset of one frame. A third negative is produced with a luminance equal to that of either of the original impressions taken separately. The second frame thus produced is equal to superposition of the second frame of one original impression on the first frame of the other. A positive is finally produced in which frames of the third sequence are interpolated among frames of the original at a rate ideally of 32 frames per second. Experiment has shown that 25 frames per second give satisfactory results despite a slight slowing. Jerky movement is eliminated and the original picture quality improved.
