In an activated sludge treatment plant (1; 76; 95; 104), an activated sludge tank (12) is accommodated in a section of an annular chamber (11). The rest of the annular chamber (11) receives operating devices of the treatment plant and can, for this purpose, be subdivided by partitions (4 to 10) into a plurality of sections (14; 20; 49; 67). The activated sludge tank (12) can be equipped with rotating immersion percolating filters (28) or stationary or movable aeration apparatuses (92, 93). Radially inside the annular chamber (11) can be arranged a secondary clarifying tank (35) or an annular tank (78) and a central tank (79) surrounded by the annular tank (78). The annular tank (78) and the central tank (79) can act in different combinations for example for preclarification, secondary clarification, mixing and balancing and for collecting sludge.
