The invention relates to an apparatus which with simple structural elements permits the use of limestone fragments for dry fluorine sorption. Charging and discharging of the sorption medium take place semi- or fully automatically. The limestone fragments are distributed on sieve surfaces, using their natural angle of repose, so that a bulk layer of any desired height automatically results. This bulk layer is open towards the crude gas side so that contaminants can be eliminated by the discharging process. With corresponding choice of the particle size, the limestone fragments act as a filter, so that even fine dust becomes trapped. The dry sorption process has the advantage that hot gases can be treated without substantial risk of corrosion. The use of limestone fragments (CaCO3) permits disposing of the residues of the fluorine sorption on normal landfills. Other than fluorides, sulphur trioxide and hydrogen chloride are chemically bound to a high degree. The simple construction of the apparatus, the core of the invention, permits a cheap process for practical environmental protection. The essentials of this can be clearly gathered from Fig. 1. <IMAGE>
