<p>Prior art catheters fail to allow for both the transportation of fluids and the sensing and monitoring of body functions. New catheters are desired to perform these functions while preserving the flexibility and strength and characteristics of the prior art catheters. The disclosed catheter eliminates this problem by proposing a body implantable intravascular lead with a first layer of plastic (11) defining a tube having a precision lumen therein and at least one electrical conductor (30) wrapped helically along the length of one or more plastic layers. The conductors are substantially parallel along the axis at each end for ease of connection to electrodes. The pitch of the helical wrap of the conductors may vary throughout the length so as to create regions of greater strength or flexibility. The conductive wires (30) are overlaid with one or more layers of plastic (39) separately insulating the wires from each other.</p> |
