In cases of urethral stricture it has hitherto been usual initially to insert a thin catheter into the urethra and to replace this after some time with a thicker one, and so on. This process was repeated several times and lasted days to weeks. Constantly changing the catheters with ever increasing diameter was uncomfortable or even painful for the patient. The invention makes this repeated procedure unnecessary. There is now only one catheter surrounded by a swellable body filled with liquid. The requisite expansion is achieved by metered addition of the contents.
