There is disclosed a silicate binder useful in single package zinc-containing coating compositions and in ceramic compositions. The binder has a limited degree of hydrolysis of about 51% to about 63%. In a preferred embodiment, the binder is a reaction product of (1) a silicate or siloxane and (2) a glycol ether or alcohol having a boiling point at least equal to the boiling point of isobutyl alcohol, e.g., butyl cellosolve. A method is also disclosed of rapidly curing silicate binder compositions by the addition of 0.05 to 1.5 weight % of a strong organic amine, e.g. monoethanolamine. |
