PRODUCTION OF CYCLOPENTANONE

PURPOSE:In the dehydrogenation of cyclopentanol in the presence of a copper catalyst, n-pentanal which is recovered from the reaction product and circulated is contained in the above reaction system together with n-pentanol to effect advantageous production of cyclopentanone. CONSTITUTION:The dehydrogenation of cyclopentanol 1 is carried out in the presence of a copper dehydrogenation catalyst as well as n-pentanol and n- pentanal that is recovered 7 from the reaction product 5 and recycled 3. Then, the reaction product 5 is subjected distillation 6 to collect n-pentanal as the top 7 and at least a part thereof is circulated 3 to the reaction system 4. The bottom fraction 10 is distilled again 11 to obtain cyclopentanone as the top 12. The present process enables the economical production of cyclopentanone with catalyst life improved and simultaneous production of n-pentanal with economy much improved.
