Such a device consists of an arrangement of ultrasonic transducers which is constructed as a matrix having m x n elements, of which each individual transducer element can be driven separately in such a way that the prescribed scanning format is realised by appropriate activation of an arbitrary number of successive transducer elements, and having an associated driving circuit and a picture signal processing device. According to the invention, the elements of a row (101-164), on the one hand, and of a column (201-264), on the other hand, are electrically connected to one another in the matrix (100), and the driving circuit (505) connects either in each case all the column elements (201-264) to frame potential and drives the row elements (101-164) with a corresponding delay, or connects all the row elements (101-164) to frame potential and drives the column elements (201-264) with a corresponding delay. <IMAGE>
