In a non-continuous operating flow of material, the loading station rapidly transfers and collects the individual pallets which have been supplied using forklift trucks, packs them into a group and automatically loads them using a driverless laterally controlled loading vehicle, once the group of pallets has been prepared for insertion on a vertically adjustable loading bridge using a guide device and the palletised material has been formatted in readiness. The loading station can also be supplied using all current conveying systems. The groups of pallets are unloaded by completing the above actions in reverse order.
