In the case of a lubricating device for a motor vehicle transmission with a pump (2) supplying the lubrication points with lubricating oil and a lubricating oil storage reservoir (15), the oil level of which is higher than an oil sump forming in the transmission housing due to the lubricating oil running off the lubrication points, it is proposed to connect both the oil sump (14) and the lubricating oil storage reservoir (15) to the intake line (19) of the pump (2) and to provide a valve (20a, 20b, 21) controlled as a function of the level of the oil sump (14) and alternately closing the intake line connections (18a, 18b). If the oil sump (14) is too low, the pump (2) pumps only from the lubricating oil storage reservoir (15), a branch line (8) of the pressure line (3) of the pump (2) opening into the lubricating oil storage reservoir (15) having an overflow (17) into the transmission housing. Despite a large total quantity of lubricating oil, the oil sump in the transmission housing is thereby kept as low as possible in order to avoid splash losses and at the same time to prevent dry running of the pump. <IMAGE>
