Capable of producing a wide-angle atomised spray of liquid so as to promote a high recirculation rate of the combustion gases, the invention provides for: (a) passing a gas tangentially into a cylindrical chamber with forward and rearward end walls so as to cause the gas to rotate; (b) increasing the linear velocity of the gas by passing it spirally inwards towards the centre of the chamber; (c) transforming about half of the linear velocity into axial velocity by passing the inwardly-spiralling gas around a sharp corner and out of the chamber into a cylindrical outlet tube to establish a rotating vortex in the latter; (d) expelling a jet of liquid centrifugally into the periphery of the rotating vortex; and (e) passing the rotating gas and liquid combination out of the outlet tube.
