A fuel consumption indicator for motor vehicles having an internal combustion engine with intake manifold has a partial vacuum meter (11, 11') with a first partial vacuum switch (12, 12') which is closed above a partial vacuum in the intake manifold corresponding to a low fuel consumption and is otherwise open. An engine speed meter (13) has two engine speed switches (14, 15), one (14) of which is closed above a first engine speed (n1) which is located at the start of an engine speed range which is favourable for consumption and the second (15) of which is closed above a second engine speed (n2) which is located at the end of the engine speed range which is favourable for consumption, both switches being otherwise open. An evaluation unit (16) comprises a logical connection circuit with three digital outputs (17, 18, 19), one (17) of which only receives a signal when the partial vacuum switch (12, 12') and the first engine speed switch (14) are closed and the second engine speed switch (15) is open, the third output (19) of which only receives a signal when the partial vacuum switch (12, 12') is opened and the two engine speed switches (14, 15) are both opened or both closed, the second (18) of which receives a signal in all the other switching states of the three switches (12, 12'; 14, 15). The consumption indicator instrument (20) has three different signal generators (21, 22, 23; 55, 56, 57) which emit visual and/or audible signals. <IMAGE>
