The invention relates to a vehicle seat with a rail guide which can be adjusted and locked in the direction of travel, a trigger handle for the rail locking bolt and a shock absorber which is assigned to the rail guide and absorbs longitudinal impacts to the front and to the rear and can be switched on and off as desired in that the free passage of the shock absorber is obstructed by a locking bolt or released. Switching off occurs if excessively large horizontal impacts and deflections occur. The mechanisms for locking the rails and the switching on and off of the longitudinal shock absorber have previously been too costly, too complicated and too user-unfriendly. In accordance with the object upon which the invention is based, a remedy is provided for this in that the handle which serves to release the rail locking bolt and the switching handle for switching on and off the longitudinal shock absorber are combined to form a common actuation handle, and in that this handle is in a driving connection both with the rail bolt and the locking bolt which is assigned to the free passage for the shock absorber, the adjustment range of the common actuation handle extending over three defined switching positions, the 1st position of which being assigned to the rigid locking position of the rail guide when the free passage of the shock absorber is switched off, the 2nd position being assigned to the locking position when the free passage of the shock absorber is switched on and the 3rd position being assigned to the released lock of the rail guide. This results in a more simple arrangement and design of the rail lock and of the switching device for the longitudinal shock absorber, a reduced space for arranging these and a simplified synchronous controllability of these mechanisms.
