Electrical apparatus enclosed to contain an inert halogenated atmosphere specifically SF6 to suppress arcing, together with a block of absorbent matl. to scavenge any moisture or acidic byproducts from degradation of the enclosed atmosphere, has the absorbent in a subsidiary enclosure (3) separated from the main enclosure by a membrane permeable to the decomposition products but not to the inert gas. Allows the scavenger block to be replaced, or regenerated by evacuation/flushing via external connections, without loss or contamination of the residual inert atmosphere within the main enclosure.
