PURPOSE:To separately detect methane and hydrocarbon of a propane-propylene fraction, by a method wherein the hydrocarbon is oxidized with sulfur trioxide into carbon monoxide, which is treated with a mixture of diiodine pentoxide and silicon dioxide containing sulfuric acid to precipitate iodine. CONSTITUTION:A chamber 5 is filled with a porous alpha-alumina particle impregnated with liquid SO3 and methane or hydrocarbon of a propane-propylene fraction is oxidized with sulfur trioxide into carbon monoxide. The carbon monoxide thus formed in the chamber 5 is sent to a chamber 6 and reacts with a mixture of diiodine pentoxide and silicon dioxide wetted by concentrated sulfuric acid filling the chamber 6 to precipitate iodine. The brownish green color of the iodine enables qualitative analysis of the hydrocarbon gas. |
