The grate is bounded on both sides by an end wall (22) which is made up of air chambers (20) with a closed flow space (30). The flow space (30) is covered on the combustion chamber side by the end wall (22) and a partition (27). The space formed in between is filled with a fibre material (28). The flow space (30) represents a defined flow channel with a substituted inlet and outlet opening (32,34) in which forced throughflow occurs of the cool air flowing into the combustion chamber. The outlet opening (34) has a slot-shaped channel (34a) which is inclined relative to the end wall (22). A coherent air curtain at a relatively high air temperature is produced at the end wall (22) due to the forced flow of air in the air chamber (20) and due to the outlet, inclined relative to the end wall (22), of the air from the air chamber (20), which air curtain contains an excess of oxygen with which the CO gases in the flue gases are completely oxidised to CO2. <IMAGE>
