The device serves to control the rolls of a vertical stand of a rolling mill during vertical or edge rolling of slabs and in order to control the thickness during horizontal rolling. Each of the adjusting spindles 5 has an axial passage 15 housing a piston 17 and a plunger 18 at the end remote from the roll, and a piston 34 at the end nearer the roll. The space between the pistons is filled with a pressure medium in which the plunger is immersed. A continual comparison is made between desired and actual values, and the plunger adjusted accordingly to produce a change in pressure in the medium and adjustment of piston 34 and a change in roll tension via electrohydraulic control valve 32. The main spindle 5 is moved by an electric motor via pinion 12 and nut 9.
