During continuous winding operation, the length of the winding-on material (5) is determined with the aid of a gauge roll (7). The revolutions of the winding beam (2) are counted automatically at the same time in this case. The revolution counters (8, 9) that are present for this purpose are connected to an electronic evaluation device (13). The evaluation device (13) continuously makes use of the number of revolutions of the gauge roll (7) per revolution of the winding beam (2) automatically to determine and, if necessary, record, the circumferential length of the material (5) winding onto the winding beam. In the event of departure from continuous winding operation, the length of the material (5) winding onto the winding beam (2) is further counted in a way such that the last determined circumferential length is automatically summed per counted revolution of the winding beam (2) with the aid of special devices (15, 16) until the normal continuous winding operation resumes, whereupon the gauge roll (7) once again takes over the length measurement. The aim is as precise as possible a length measurement even in cases in which the gauge roll (7) cannot correctly fulfil its function. This is the case, for example, in acceleration processes, deceleration processes, startup processes or in creep-feed operation. <IMAGE>
