Polarised capacitors, for example electrolytic capacitors, must be checked to see whether they have been installed with the correct polarity in electrical circuits. For this purpose, a test cup (22) of conductive material is placed over the capacitor (14) to be tested. The test cup (22) is supplied with charging pulses (28) which lead to a charging-up of the capacitor (14) if it is installed with the wrong polarity. If, in contrast, the capacitor is installed with the correct polarity, a fixed potential (0 volt) is applied to the outside of the capacitor and it is not possible to charge the capacitor via the test cup (22). The voltage occurring across the capacitor (14) is supplied to a comparator (38) via an electrometer amplifier (36). The comparator (38) outputs a signal when the voltage across the capacitor (14) exceeds a predetermined voltage. <IMAGE>
