PURPOSE:To carry out the reaction of ethylene with chlorine for the preparation of the titled substance useful as a raw material of vinyl chloride, economically, without causing side reactions, by using a reaction medium comprising 1,2-dichloroethane containing specific amount of iron chloride, adding oxygen to chlorine at a specific ratio, and reacting at >=100 deg.C. CONSTITUTION:Ethylene is made to react with chlorine containing oxygen to obtain 1,2-dichloroethane. The reaction is carried out in a reactor preferably made of stainless steel using 1,2-dichloroethane containing <=700wt.ppm and >=50wt.ppm of iron chloride as a reaction medium at >=100 deg.C, preferably at 120-140 deg.C. The concentration of oxygen in chlorine is at least 1%, preferably >=2%, and the molar ratio of ethylene to chlorine is preferably (1.005-1.2) to 1. |
