PURPOSE:To improve the recording/reproducing characteristics of an sound signal without deteriorating the recording/reproducing characteristics of a video signal, by separating the sound signal and then recording it with use of a region outside the video signal band within a horizontal scan flyback time. CONSTITUTION:The sound signal supplied to an input terminal 7 is fed to a sampling circuit 9 and sampled with a sampling signal obtained by redoubling a horizontal synchronizing signal separated from a video signal through a horizontal synchronizing signal separating circuit 8 through a redoubling circuit 10. An sound sample thus obtained is held by sample holding circuits 21 and 22 with double-phase clocks phi1 and phi2 and via a time axis compressing circuit 11 and then switched by a switch 23. A sample holding signal is supplied to a frequency modulator 13, and an FM-modulated sound signal is obtained only in a horizontal flyback time. This sound signal is multiplexed to the video signal through an adder 14 in the form of the separation of time and the multiplexing of frequency. This multiplexed signal is supplied to a video head 16 via an amplifier 15 and recorded on a magnetic tape 17.
