The object of the invention is to develop a baling press having a vertical working position of the type mentioned in the introduction, in such a way that as low a constructional height as possible is achieved, whilst ensuring a press force of 20 tonnes or more. In the solution, there engage on the press plate two press spindles, the spindle nuts of which are each driven from a drive motor by way of a gear train, and the spindle nuts are additionally connected to one another by way of a further gear train. If low-friction gear trains are used, it is essential to have a braking device which blocks the drive motor when the end position of the press stroke is reached.
