Acylphosphine compounds of the formula Ia <IMAGE> X is oxygen, sulphur or an electron pair, R<1> is R<4> or OR<4>, R<2> is -OM where M = metal cation or ammonium cation, R<3> is a tertiary alkyl radical or cycloalkyl radical or a phenyl radical which is only substituted in one ortho-position to the carbonyl group, R<4> is hydrogen, or an alkyl or aryl radical. The acylphosphine compounds are highly effective photoinitiators for photopolymerisable materials, such as coating compositions, paints, printing inks, unsaturated polyesters, recording materials and, preferably, aqueous polymer dispersions or solutions.
