PURPOSE:To make a display bright and a display contour sharp by sealing a nematic liquid crystal contg. a dichromatic dye and a chiral material between a front electrode substrate having a light scattering surface on the front and a back electrode substrate having a light reflective plate. CONSTITUTION:A light scattering surface 21 is formed on the surface of a front electrode substrate 20 of two sheets of electrode substrates which are disposed so as to oppose each other, by adhering a light scattering sheet or the like on said surface. A transparent electrode 22 for display is provided on the rear of the electrode 20. A counter electrode 24 of conductive metal and a light reflective plate 25 using aluminum or the like are provided on the opposing surface of an electrode substrate 23 on the rear. A nematic liquid crystal 26 contg. a dichromatic dye and a chiral material is sealed between two sheets of the substrates 21, 23. The color of the dichromatic dye is visible in the liquid crystal 26 while no voltage is applied thereon. Light permeates through the part A applied with the voltage and is reflected by the electrode 24 so that said part appears white. In the end, the display segment is displayed white on the colored ground of the dichromatic dye. |
