<p>Radioactive waste is mixed with inert components and formed into vitreous compsn. which is melted and formed into fibres. The fibres are combined into a cable which is sufficiently flexible to be wound onto a support. Leaders are provided at each end of the cable for feeding it to the support and for retrieving it. The cable is lowered underground and wound onto the support for storage. The method allows long term storage of nuclear waste away from the biosphere. The cable can be retrieved if the underground storage location becomes unsafe, or for extn. of nuclides, or for addn. of further waste.</p> |
