Method and device for measuring the height and lateral position of the contact wire of an electric contact line for railways, having a mobile scanning device attached to the railway vehicle, power/voltage converters being provided for converting the forces occurring at the scanning device due to lateral and/or height offsets of the contact line into signal voltages which are proportional to the lateral and/or height offsets and are transmitted in a potential-free fashion into the railway vehicle and are there displayed and/or recorded in a proportional manner over the stretch of line covered by the railway vehicle. <IMAGE>
