The water-soluble rifamycin derivatives possess a chemical structure of the general formula: <IMAGE> where = N-R is a hydrazone radical, an acylhydrazone radical or an oxime radical on the 3-formylrifamycin SV, A is an alkali metal salt of an organic acid having a straight or branched chain of 1 to 16 carbon atoms, or of an aromatic acid which is substituted in the nucleus or is not substituted, or of an acid having a steroid structure, and <IMAGE>n is the number of the salt molecules between 0.5 and 5. They are prepared by bringing into contact a rifamycin derivative of the formula II <IMAGE> with the solution of the salt A in a solvent consisting of an aliphatic alcohol having 1 to 8 carbon atoms or of an aliphatic halohydrocarbon having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, or a mixture of these, after which the reaction product, following dilution of the reaction mass with an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon, is separated off by being precipitated out.
