A cellular, volume-compressible, strand-shaped rubber profile body, especially foam rubber profile body, has a plastics covering surrounding it without a firm bond. As a result, while maintaining the favourable elasticity properties of the cellular rubber profile body, when used as a sealing element, the gas and moisture absorption are considerably reduced and the chemical resistance and/or the mechanical loading capacity increased through the barrier effects of the plastics covering.
