PURPOSE:To read characters of low quality with high accuracy, by binary coding the picture elements of a character pattern expressed in multiplex values after giving a fine local processing to those picture elements. CONSTITUTION:For a reading device, a character pattern 2 on a recording medium 1 is converted into electric signals proportional to density by a scanner 8 consisting of a lamp, a lens and a semiconductor photosensor. These electric signal are then converted into digital signals of 16 stages to show levels of density and transferred to a storage device 9. A local processor 10 controls the level of density for the center picture element on the basis of the density level within a mask and stores the picture element to a storage device 11. A binary coding device 12 binary codes a multi-value character pattern within the device 11 and stores it to a storage device 13. Finally, the character name is decided by a recognition logical device 14. |
