<p>The invention relates to a method and apparatus with which to close a piece of tubular material gathered in the shape of a caterpillar (in particular synthetic gut as is used in the production of sausages) by twisting off that portion of the material which creates the last folds of the caterpillar by means of a tool elastically attached to the end of the caterpillar and which is coaxial in relation to the latter, the tool having a smaller diameter than that of the caterpillar, characterized in that by means of a few turns of the tool pressing against the end of the caterpillar, the material at this point of location is forced to position itself upon the tool while turning and, thereafter, the tool being retracted for a short distance, a centreless twist being formed which travels into the interior of the caterpillar the tool being finally completely pulled from the tubular material.</p> |
