PURPOSE:A couple of heating burners set on a glass lathe are alternately used to effect continuous reaction for glass formation, thus producing an optical fiber preform in a short time with increased productivity. CONSTITUTION:In Figure-a, at the start of the operations, the burner support 7a is positioned at the end of the quartz glass tube 2 for feeding starting gases, while the burner holder 10a is at the center of the tube 2. The burner 14a heats the tube 2 at a temperature of 1,500 deg.C to start forming the glass layer, then it gradually traverses rightward as shown in Figure-b. At this time, the other burner holder 10b is positioned out of the center of the tube 2 at the exhaust end of the starting gases 19 and the burner 14b is only just fired. As soon as the support 7a starts traversing, the burner 14b is quickly sent leftward to the end 18 for feeding the starting gases. When the support 7a reaches the exhaust end 19, as shown in Figure-c, the holder 10a is moved by motor 11a set on the support 7a in the right direction of the lathe 1 and removed out of the tube 2, further the flame of the burner 14a is made small just firing. At the same time, the burner 14b starts traversing rightward to heat the tube 2 similarly. |
