The equipment of a milking installation is automatically rinsed by a system using a cleaning solution supplied from the system control (17). The installation is connected to a source of underpressure which causes the cleaning solution to flow into the milk lock gate (7). A float (11) in the milk lock gate rises with the inflowing fluid and opens a first valve (22) in a tank (20). A second valve (23) is initially opened, but closes as soon as atmospheric pressure is admitted to the milk lock gate. This enables cleaning liquid to flow to a safety separator (4).
