Process for the selective hydrogenation of acetylene compounds in hydrocarbon streams containing high contents of i-alkenes and/or conjugated diolefins

Acetylene compounds in an amount of 0.001 to 50% by weight in hydrocarbon streams which contain high contents of i-alkenes and/or conjugated diolefins can be selectively hydrogenated with hydrogen if the hydrogenation is carried out in the gas or liquid phase in the presence of a cation exchanger in the H<+> form, which contains 0.001 to 10 g of one or more metals of the VIth and/or VIIth and/or VIIIth sub-group of the Periodic Table of the Elements in elemental form per litre of the dry cation exchanger and which has a degree of crosslinking of 2 to 65% and a specific surface area of 5 to 70 m<2>/g of the dry resin. The content of conjugated diolefins in the feed hydrocarbon stream can optionally be from 0.3 to 70% by weight.
