The light modulator consists of a birefringent component arranged between polarisers. The birefringent component is composed of a plurality of leaf-shaped piezoelectric films (7) to which electrodes (6) are applied, or of two dielectric films (32, 35) wound into a coil, each of which has an electrode (33, 34) on one surface. The electrical polarisation devices (8) of mutually adjacent films are perpendicular to the film direction and opposed to one another. A constant potential, and a potential which is varied by the modulation signal, are applied respectively to the mutually adjacent electrodes (33, 34). <IMAGE>
