The invention relates to a method for measuring the optical length of the distances between the various optical interfaces of the eye. The method is based on observation of interference phenomena of the light which is reflected or remitted by the eye, illuminated by partially coherent light, at the front surface of the cornea and at the inner interfaces. In order to observe these interference phenomena, the path differences, arising at the eye, of the light bundles are compensated by an interferometer. This can be performed, for example, by a Michelson interferometer, as represented in the figure. The displacement, required to compensate the path differences, of one of the interferometer end mirrors from the basic interferometer position (15' to 15 or to 15") is then equal to the optical length to be measured. <IMAGE>
