Method for monitoring the functional capacity of a transmission path for digital signals which is terminated at both ends with terminals (1, 2). Terminals (1, 2) and regenerator points (3, 4, 5) are fitted with monitoring devices which are equipped with microprocessors. Data telegrams are transmitted in cyclical sequence from at least one terminal via all monitoring devices (6) to the other terminal and back. Different transmission paths (loop formation) are used for the outward and return paths. The transmission takes place on the existing paths by means of amplitude or phase modulation.
